Your First 30 Days in Malaysia as a Student: The Real Checklist

Landing in Malaysia is the start of the paperwork, not the end. Here is what your first month actually looks like, based on the process EMGS publishes. Checked 31 October 2026.

Before you fly

Fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days before departure. Travel with your documents in hand luggage: passport, offer letter, eVAL, e-Visa and MDAC confirmation.

Week 1: the medical

Complete your post-arrival medical screening at an EMGS panel clinic within 7 working days of arrival. This is not optional and not flexible - EMGS states it cannot start your Student Pass endorsement without it. Your university will point you to a panel clinic; go in the first days, not on day seven.

Within 7 working days of arrival - not optional

Weeks 1–4: endorsement and i-Kad

Your university submits your passport to Immigration for the Student Pass endorsement. Once endorsed, you receive your i-Kad - the student identity card (RM 50 a year in the EMGS fee schedule) - which is your day-to-day proof of student status in Malaysia. Keep copies of everything while your passport is with Immigration.

Settling in

Move into the accommodation you arranged before flying - budget a one-time rental deposit of RM 1,000 to 2,500 on top of monthly rent (Monash University Malaysia’s published campus-area figures). Get a local SIM early: phone plus internet starts at about RM 99 a month by the same published estimates. Then the useful routines: your university’s orientation, the route to campus, and where the affordable food is - meals run RM 7 to 30 in the same published figures.
