Working in Malaysia After Graduation: The Graduate Pass Explained (2026)

Can you stay and work in Malaysia after your degree? Yes - Malaysia has a published route called the Graduate Pass, and Indian graduates are currently eligible. Here is exactly how it works, from EMGS and the Immigration Department's own pages, checked 31 October 2026.

01

What the Graduate Pass is.

The Graduate Pass is a Social Visit Pass that lets international graduates stay in Malaysia for 12 months after finishing their degree - and work in permitted job sectors without needing an employer to sponsor them first. It comes with a Multiple Entry Visa, so you can travel in and out freely, and your dependents can apply to stay with you for the same duration.

It is a bridge: time to find the right job, then move to an Employment Pass with your employer's sponsorship.

02

Who can apply.

From EMGS's own eligibility list:

  • You completed a Bachelor's degree or higher in Malaysia
  • Your Student Pass is still valid when you apply (a check-out memo or social visit pass during processing makes you ineligible)
  • Your passport is valid for at least 18 months
  • You have an active health insurance policy for the pass duration
  • You provide a personal bond with a Malaysian citizen sponsor earning at least RM 1,500 a month
  • You have no legal convictions in Malaysia
03

The Indian-student window - read this carefully.

India is on the eligible-nationality list, but with a published condition: the extension of the Graduate Pass to Indian and Chinese nationals is currently valid until 31 December 2026, and approvals are considered case by case. Indian applicants must also provide a letter of good conduct from their university or the Indian embassy.

If you graduate in 2026, this window matters to you today. If you are planning for 2027 or later, check the EMGS page again at application time - extensions have been announced before, but plan on what is published, not on what you hope.

04

What you prepare.

  • Passport bio-data page (18+ months validity)
  • Completion or expected-completion letter from your university
  • One year of locally purchased health insurance cover (monthly plans need a year's advance payment; personal-accident insurance is not accepted)
  • Personal bond, stamped by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN)
  • Sponsor's declaration letter, certified by a Sessions Court Judge, Magistrate, Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public, plus the sponsor's last 3 months' payslips (or SSM licence and bank statements if self-employed)
  • Photo, 217 x 280 px

The sponsor requirement is the part most students underestimate: line up a Malaysian citizen willing to sponsor you well before graduation.

05

The honest picture.

The Graduate Pass lets you work in permitted sectors part-time or full-time while you search - it is not itself a work permit, and it does not guarantee a job or a later Employment Pass. But as a published, low-cost bridge from study to work, it is one of the clearest post-study routes in the region: 12 months, no employer sponsor needed to stay, family can join.

Where Emir fits.

For students we place, the post-study plan starts before the final semester: the sponsor, the insurance, the documents, the timing. Message us and we will walk you through the current rules for your graduation date.
