Cost of Studying in Malaysia for International Students (2026-27)

What does a year of study in Malaysia actually cost? Here is the honest answer, built from the universities’ own fee pages and the official visa fee schedule, so you can plan with real numbers. All figures were checked on 31 October 2026; universities revise fees every year, so treat the linked official pages as the final word.

1. Tuition fees

RM 32,600 – 51,007 / year
Bachelor’s per-year range from the official fee pages we checked (linked in Sources), before the 6% service tax for non-Malaysian students.

2. Visa and EMGS costs

≈ RM 2,700 – 3,300
First year, from the official EMGS fee schedule dated 28 October 2025, including the 8% tax on EMGS fees.

3. Living costs

Ranges built from the official university fee pages linked in Sources - the specific universities we checked, not a Malaysia-wide market survey. Fees vary by university and programme, and universities revise them every year, so the university’s own fee page is the final word.

Private universities note a 6% service tax for non-Malaysian students, in force since 1 July 2025, charged on top of the fees listed above.
02

Visa and EMGS costs.

Student Pass applications for international students run through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services). From the official EMGS fee schedule dated 28 October 2025, a new student pays:

EMGS itemFee
Processing fee - course of 6 to 12 monthsRM 1,600
Processing fee - shorter coursesRM 800
eVAL (Visa Approval Letter)RM 150
i-Kad student identity cardRM 50a year

Medical insurance, depending on the planRM 468 to 978a year
Student Pass stickerRM 60a year
Multiple-entry visa, for most nationalitiesRM 0 to 50
EMGS processing and eVAL fees carry an additional 8% service tax. The e-Visa and any university handling charges are separate.
First-year EMGS total, including the 8% tax ≈ RM 2,700 to 3,300 Depending on your insurance plan and course length.
03

Living costs.

Monash University Malaysia publishes planning estimates for its own campus area, and they are the most detailed public figures available:

Room rent
RM 800 – 1,500 / month
Rental deposit (one-time)
RM 1,000 – 2,500
Food
RM 7 – 30 / meal
Groceries
RM 100 – 500 / month
Phone + internet
from RM 99 / month
Typical student budget - rent, food, groceries, connectivity RM 1,500 to 2,500 / month  →  RM 18,000 to 30,000 / year Central Kuala Lumpur sits at the top of the range; cities like Cyberjaya and Johor Bahru come in lower.
Treat these as one university’s published figures for its area, not a fixed Malaysia-wide cost - your university’s own estimates are the ones to budget from.
