Can International Students Work in Malaysia? The Real Rules (2026)

Can you work part-time while studying in Malaysia? Yes - and the official rules are clear once you see them. Knowing them keeps your Student Pass safe. Here is what EMGS itself publishes, checked 31 October 2026.

01

The core rule.

Maximum 20 hours per week ONLY during semester breaks or holidays of more than 7 days Not during teaching weeks. Applies to international students at Malaysian public or private higher education institutions. Your Student Pass must stay valid throughout.
02

Where you can work.

Restaurants
Permitted sector
Petrol kiosks
Permitted sector
Mini markets
Permitted sector
Hotels
Permitted sector

Only these four sectors are permitted. Even there, some roles are banned: you cannot work as a cashier, and in hotels you cannot work as a singer, masseur, musician or guest relations officer. Any job or activity deemed immoral is prohibited outright.

03

The approval step most students miss.

Prior Immigration approval

You cannot simply take a job. Part-time work needs prior approval from the Department of Immigration.

Applied through your university

The application goes through your university - you apply together with a representative of your institution at the Immigration Department.

Working without this approval is illegal work, and it can cost you your Student Pass.
04

The honest picture.

Between the 20-hour cap, the semester-break-only window and the four permitted sectors, part-time work in Malaysia is pocket money, not a way to fund your degree. Budget your studies as if you will earn nothing; treat approved holiday work as a bonus.

Where Emir fits.

We brief every student we place on these rules before they fly, so nobody learns them from a visa officer. Message us if you want the full pre-departure checklist.
