Scholarships in Malaysia for Indian Students: How It Really Works
Every family asks about scholarships. The honest picture: in Malaysia, the scholarships that matter for international students are the universities’ own schemes - merit-based fee waivers with specific grade conditions, published on the universities’ own pages. Here is how they work, with one real example - including the eligibility question even that example leaves open. Checked 31 October 2026.
A real example with real amounts.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia publishes a Foundation Excellence Award for foundation students from the July and September 2026 and January and May 2027 intakes:
| Grade achieved in the Foundation Programme | Award |
|---|---|
| Grade A - a 70% average or above | RM 15,000(about Rs 3.5 lakh) scholarship per year for the whole undergraduate degree |
| Grade B - 60% | RM 9,000(about Rs 2.1 lakh) annual tuition fee waiver |
Rupee figures at RM 1 = Rs 23.4437, 29 October 2026.
Two things to notice: the money follows grades you achieve after joining in Malaysia - the Grade A award is conditional on keeping a 70% average every year, and revoked if the grade slips - and it is a fee waiver, not cash.
The pattern to look for.
Heriot-Watt Malaysia’s scholarships page also lists a High Achiever’s Scholarship for foundation and undergraduate programmes, PhD scholarships and a Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) scheme, and its discounts page lists an Early Bird Waiver, a Foundation Progression Discount, a Family Discount and bursaries including MBA and postgraduate taught bursaries. Other universities run their own named schemes.
How to assess your real eligibility.
Who can hold it?
Is it open to international students, or Malaysians only?
What earns it?
What exact grade or score earns it - and is that measured at entry or renewed yearly?
Waiver or cash?
Is it a fee waiver or cash?
What revokes it?
A scheme you keep for three years beats a bigger one you lose in semester two.
Budget without scholarships first. Plan your finances on the full fee; treat any scholarship as upside. Fee waivers are competitive and conditional - so before you count on one, we check your grades against the university’s current scheme and help you apply, and the university’s written confirmation is what makes it real.
