How to Study in Malaysia: Everything Indian Students Need to Know (2026)
Thinking about Malaysia for your degree? This is the whole journey in one place - choosing a university, applying, the visa, fees in rupees, and what happens after graduation - every fact from official sources, checked 31 October 2026. Each step links to a detailed guide.
Why families choose Malaysia.
- Real degrees, lower totals: Malaysia's foreign branch campuses - Heriot-Watt, Monash, Nottingham, Newcastle and Swinburne - award their home university's degree (Swinburne Sarawak puts it as 'Start in Kuching, Graduate from Melbourne' on its own site), and strong Malaysian private universities like Taylor's, Sunway, APU and UCSI offer wide choice. A Heriot-Watt master's, for example, runs RM 67,708.14 with the 6% service tax (about Rs 15.9 lakh) on its published fee page, against GBP 24,952 (about Rs 31.7 lakh) for the same master's family in Edinburgh.
- Recognised quality: Malaysia's oldest public universities sit in the QS World University Rankings - UM 58th in QS 2026 - and the branch campuses carry their home universities' names and curricula.
- Close and comfortable: direct Kochi-Kuala Lumpur flights are listed on Cochin airport's live international departure board (AirAsia, Batik Air and Malaysia Airlines) - plus familiar food, English widely spoken, and a large Indian community.
Choosing a university and course.
Start with budget and marks, then subject strength, then intakes and location. Published examples of the three university types: a public research university like UM publishes programme-specific full-degree international fees in its official fee structure; a Malaysian private university like Sunway publishes per-year fees with frequent intakes (January, April and September); foreign branch campuses award the home university's degree. Durations differ, so compare full-degree totals, not per-year figures. Our choosing guide lays out all three types with published fees.
Applying.
Applications go directly to the university with your academic records and English proof (each university and programme sets its own English requirement - IELTS, PTE or accepted alternatives). Typical published ranges at branch campuses: IELTS 5.5-6.5 depending on level. Documents are simple: passport, certificates, transcripts, photo. Our documents guide has the full checklist.
The visa - simpler than you fear.
One national system: EMGS. Your university files your Student Pass application through EMGS; you receive an eVAL (Visa Approval Letter), apply for an e-Visa (Indian nationals are on Malaysia's e-Visa list, about 48 hours processing as published), fly, and complete endorsement. Current published EMGS items for the first year come to roughly RM 2,700-3,300 including the 8% tax (about Rs 63,300-77,400 at RM 1 = Rs 23.4437, 29 October 2026), itemised in our visa guide.
Fees and living costs in rupees.
Tuition varies by university type and programme: selected published annual examples - around RM 36,000 a year at APU (three-year computing total), RM 39,600 at Sunway (business), RM 69,000 for a Nottingham MEng year, so about Rs 8.4-16.2 lakh a year at RM 1 = Rs 23.4437, 29 October 2026 - with medicine higher. Living costs in Kuala Lumpur are moderate by regional standards - our cost and accommodation guides break them down from official and university-published figures.
After graduation.
Malaysia publishes a post-study route: the Graduate Pass - 12 months to work in permitted sectors without employer sponsorship (for Indian nationals currently extended until 31 December 2026, case by case). Longer term, PR is possible but discretionary and slow; our PR guide is honest about what is real.
