English Requirements for Malaysian Universities: IELTS and Alternatives

Do you need IELTS for Malaysia? Usually some proof of English, yes - but the exact requirement is set by each university, each campus and sometimes each programme, and there are more accepted tests than IELTS alone. Here is a real published example from a Malaysian campus, and how to check yours. Checked 31 October 2026.

01

A real published example: Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

The university’s own Malaysia requirements document lists, for the Putrajaya campus:

Entry pointIELTS Academic
Foundation entry5.5
Undergraduate year-one entry5.5
Direct entry into year two6.0
Direct entry into year three6.5
Postgraduate taught entry6.5

Equivalent scores are published for TOEFL iBT (70 for foundation and first-year entry, 90 for postgraduate), PTE Academic (44 to 58) and Cambridge, and the accepted tests are the ones recognised under EMGS and JPT lists for Malaysia.

One warning this example shows well: the same university’s UK campus publishes different numbers, so always read the Malaysia campus requirement, not the UK one.
02

If your score is short.

Pre-Sessional English Programme - Heriot-Watt Malaysia

10 weeks · RM 5,000 (about Rs 1.2 lakh, at RM 1 = Rs 23.4437, 29 Oct 2026)
At the Putrajaya campus. Entry from IELTS 4.5 (lower intermediate) or 5.0 (intermediate); after the course you sit an external test (IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL) to reach your course’s required score. Other universities run their own routes - a short score is usually a timing problem, not a dead end.
03

How to check your requirement.

1

Go to the exact programme page

The exact course, at the exact university and campus, for your intake - that page’s English requirement is the only one that matters.

2

Plan backwards

The EMGS visa process needs your offer letter, and your offer letter needs your English proof, so book the test months before the visa timeline rather than retaking blindly at the last minute.

Practical note for Kerala students. Do not assume English-medium schooling waives the test - each Malaysian university publishes exactly which qualifications it accepts, and most Indian applicants should simply budget for IELTS or an accepted alternative from the moment they shortlist.
