Foundation Year in Malaysia: What It Is, What It Costs (2026-27)
If your school results do not yet meet a university’s direct entry requirements - or you want a structured bridge between school and a degree - a foundation year is the standard route into a Malaysian university. Here is what it involves and what it costs, checked 31 October 2026 against official pages.

What it is.
A foundation programme is a one-year university course that prepares you for a specific bachelor’s degree - business, science, engineering or computing tracks. Finish it with the required grades and you progress directly into year one of the linked degree at that university. It is not a detour: for many students it is the normal first year.
Real fees.

That flexibility matters if you finish school mid-year: you rarely wait long for the next start.
How to decide.
Marks meet direct entry?
Skip foundation and start the degree.
Close but short?
Foundation at the university you want to graduate from is usually safer than a gap year - you enter the university’s system, its teaching style and its progression track from day one.
