Law in Malaysia for Indian Students: Courses, Fees, and Practising in India (2026-27)
A Malaysian law degree can be excellent value - but for Indian students the Bar Council of India rules decide whether you can practise back home. Here are the official rules, in plain language. Checked 31 October 2026.
The rule that decides everything.
Per the Bar Council of India's notification on recognition of foreign universities (applying to admissions from the 2023-24 academic session onward):
- A law degree from a foreign university NOT recognised by the BCI cannot be equated to an Indian law degree. Its holder cannot sit the BCI Qualifying Examination for Indian Nationals Holding Foreign Law Degrees - and therefore cannot enrol with any State Bar Council.
- If the university IS BCI-recognised, you must still pass the BCI Qualifying Examination after your degree, then satisfy the Advocates Act, 1961 enrolment prerequisites.
- The duration pattern matters, per the notification's own examples: a 12+3 pattern (three-year law degree straight after school) requires a two-year bridge course at the India International University of Legal Education and Research, Goa; a 12+3(graduation)+3 pattern (a three-year law degree after a three-year graduation) needs no bridge course.
- An LLM anywhere - including India - requires a BCI-recognised LLB first; foreign LLB holders must complete BCI equivalence before any post-LLB study in India.
What this means for a Malaysian law degree.
Before you pay any deposit, check two things in writing: whether the specific Malaysian university's law degree is recognised by the BCI (recognition is by university, not by country), and the programme's duration pattern against the BCI rules. Confirming both before you pay any deposit protects the entire investment - we verify them with you before you commit.
Studying law in Malaysia itself.
Practising law IN Malaysia is a separate track through the Malaysian Bar's own qualification route - plan for the India route unless you have specific Malaysian eligibility.
