Nursing in Malaysia for Indian Students: Courses, Fees, and Practising After (2026-27)

Nursing is a career that travels - but only if you understand registration before you enrol. Here is what studying nursing in Malaysia really involves, with regulator-sourced facts. Checked 31 October 2026.

01

Studying nursing in Malaysia.

  • Public option: Universiti Malaya's Bachelor of Nursing Science is published at RM 149,200 total for international students (about Rs 35.0 lakh at RM 1 = Rs 23.4437, 29 October 2026).
  • Private universities across Malaysia also run nursing degrees and diplomas; fees vary widely, so get the official quote for your programme - that is what we verify for you.
  • Malaysian nursing programmes include supervised clinical placements; check the programme's MQA accreditation before applying.
02

Practising in India after a Malaysian nursing degree - the official route.

The Indian Nursing Council examines foreign nursing qualifications individually. Per INC's own equivalency page (notification No-15 of 2022, dated 21 October 2022):

  • Your syllabus and confirmation from the foreign authorities are examined case by case.
  • You apply for equivalence with your transcript - it must convert credits into hours (one credit of theory and one of practical equal to how many hours), and it goes before INC's Equivalency Committee.
  • The current equivalence fee is Rs 5,000 by demand draft.
  • Registration in India is granted on the Equivalency Committee's recommendation under Section 11(2)(a) of the INC Act, 1947.

The honest caveat: equivalence is a process, not a formality - keep your complete transcripts, clinical-hour records and university confirmations from day one, and expect the committee's decision to take time.

03

Working in Malaysia after graduating - do not count on it as the default.

Be careful not to misread the rules here. The Ministry of Health Malaysia's published criteria (January 2023) govern FOREIGN-TRAINED nurses - nurses trained abroad whose Malaysian employer must obtain a Temporary Practicing Certificate from the Nursing Board Malaysia before applying for a work permit and visa. They do not create a general post-study work route for international graduates of Malaysian nursing programmes, and Malaysian nursing registration for non-citizens is a narrow, case-by-case question. Plan for the India equivalence route above (or a third country's registration route), and verify any Malaysian employment possibility directly with the Nursing Board Malaysia before relying on it.
