Malaysia vs Singapore for Indian Students: An Honest Cost Comparison (2026)
Singapore or Malaysia for your degree? Both are excellent, close to home, and safe - but they cost very differently. Here is the comparison with real published figures from both countries' universities, checked 31 October 2026.
Tuition: the real gap.
Singapore's National University of Singapore publishes its AY2026/2027 international fees. For an international student without the MOE Tuition Grant, per year (inclusive of 9% GST):
- Business: S$33,400 - about Rs 24.8 lakh at SGD 1 = Rs 74.3554 (29 October 2026)
- Computing / Design and Engineering: S$39,700 - about Rs 29.5 lakh
- Medicine: S$190,150 - about Rs 1.41 crore per year
With the Tuition Grant, fees drop (business to S$22,200, computing to S$21,400) - but the grant carries a bond to work in Singapore after graduation, which is a real commitment to weigh.
Compare Malaysia's published figures for the same fields:
- Business at Monash Malaysia: RM 54,240 per year - about Rs 12.7 lakh
- Computer Science at Monash Malaysia: RM 57,600 per year - about Rs 13.5 lakh
- Medicine at Monash Malaysia: RM 148,320 per year - about Rs 34.8 lakh
Field for field, Malaysian tuition runs at roughly half or less of Singapore's non-subsidised rates.
Living costs and the honest trade-offs.
Singapore's living costs are among the highest in Asia; Malaysia's are among the most moderate - universities there publish monthly budgets of RM 1,500-2,000 (about Rs 35,000-47,000). Singapore's pull is real too: global rankings, a financial hub, and post-study opportunities in a different league. If Singapore fits the budget comfortably, it is a fine choice. The point of this page is not that one is better - it is that Malaysia delivers a strong, recognised degree at a total cost many more families can actually sustain without strain.
