Living Costs in Malaysia for Students: Real Budgets (2026)

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia publishes an estimated budget for its international students:

• Accommodation: RM 10,000-18,000 per year (about Rs 2.3-4.2 lakh, at RM 1 = Rs 23.4437 on 29 October 2026)
• Monthly living - food, books and day-to-day: RM 1,500-2,000 per month (about Rs 35,000-47,000)

Manipal University College Malaysia lists campus accommodation from USD 1,680 per year (about Rs 1.6 lakh at USD 1 = Rs 95.1526), plus a refundable two-month deposit of USD 280.

Treat these as moderate-budget guides from the universities themselves: your actual spend depends on housing choice and habits, but these are honest planning anchors, not marketing numbers.

Student housing splits into campus residences, purpose-built student apartments near campus, and private rentals shared with friends. Our accommodation guide walks through real rents and the trade-offs of each - proximity, facilities, contracts - with figures in rupees.

Food is where Malaysia is gentle on budgets: campus canteens and neighbourhood eateries keep a filling meal inexpensive, and Indian groceries and restaurants are everywhere in Kuala Lumpur. Transport is simple near campuses - most students walk, use university shuttles, or take the rail lines that serve the main student areas.

Plan living costs at the top of the university's published range for your first year, then adjust once you know your actual routine. Families who budget this way never face a surprise semester.
